Pogacar Eyeing 2024 Tour de France, Giro d’Italia, and Vuelta a España, Says Teammate Majka

Tadej Pogacar might participate in all three major national tours in 2024, including the Giro d’Italia, Tour de France, and Vuelta a España. This possibility is being contemplated, at least according to his teammate Rafal Majka, who shared his thoughts after concluding the season in Italy on Sunday. When asked about his leader’s intentions for the upcoming year, Majka commented, „Perhaps he intends to take on all three Tours!“

Tadej Pogacar could compete in all three Grand Tours next season. According to his teammate and right-hand man Rafal Majka, the Emirati superstar could at least fulfill that massive plan.

The 34-year-old did not deny this promise from his captain in an interview before the start of the Veneto Classic on Sunday.

„I don’t know. You’d have to ask Taddei. Maybe he wants to do all three Grand Tours,“ the former Tour de France climbing king said.

But he also acknowledged that after a year without an overall victory in a Grand Tour in 2023, the focus in 2024 will be on getting back on track to success in the Grand Tours: „It would have been nice if we’d won this year, but we’ll change that next season.“

Grand Tours: a double is a rarity

However, even if the 25-year-old enjoys a special challenge, his success in winning the 2023 Tour of Flanders proves it. To date, however, the two-time Tour de France winner has never competed in more than one Grand Tour per year.

Successful double wins in Grand Tours are also rare; the last time Marco Pantani won the Giro and Giro d’Italia in the same year was in 1998, while Chris Froome won the Tour and the Huelvata in 2017. However, both Primoz Roglic (Giro winner) and Jonas Venegade (Giro winner) came close to making it a double at the Huelvata this year.

Majka: Bora makes it a three-legged race

Majka also commented on superstar Primoz Roglic’s move from Jumbo-Visma to Germany’s Bora-Hansgrohe team, with which he himself had signed.

For Majka, the signing of Roglic by his old bosses means that the fight for the really big wins will be even more intense: „With the change of Roglic’s team, there is one more team [in the fight for the title, editor’s note], no longer just UAE and Jumbo-Visma, but probably Bora from now on… it will be interesting to race against them“.

Roglic is hailed as the pivotal transfer by Bora in their quest for Tour de France victory. The Slovenian, who claimed victory in this year’s Giro d’Italia with Jumbo-Visma, was conspicuously absent from the Tour de France lineup.
